Harry West Baxter, a revered figure in the skiing world and beloved family man, passed peacefully at home on January 28th at 95, with family by his side. He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 72 years, Martha; son Dan, of Victor, Idaho; daughter Wanda (Steve) of Hailey, Idaho; granddaughters Jennifer, Jamie, Katie, Kelly; great-granddaughters Sabine, Sylvie, Charlotte; along with many cherished friends and caregivers.
Born in New York in 1929 to George and Priscilla, Harry was the eldest of three siblings. He grew up on the slopes of Abenaki in New Hampshire and skied for Brewster Academy’s High School Varsity Team. Drafted into the Korean War, Harry first married his high school sweetheart, Martha. An Army Staff Sergeant Combat Engineer, he endured severe frostbite during the harsh winters. He returned home with a profound respect for life and an enduring aspiration to share joy through skiing. He resumed racing and became a Certified Ski Instructor at Hannes Schneider Ski School in North Conway, NH.
In 1961, Harry became Assistant Manager and Ski School Director at Mt. Whittier and was selected for the U.S. Eastern Demonstration Team. He transformed Whittier’s Ski School into a thriving institution, mentoring instructors and enhancing safety. His groundbreaking initiatives led him to Sugarloaf Ski School in 1965. As Director, Harry developed innovative techniques to make skiing accessible for persons with visual impairments and veterans with service-related injuries, with the goal of making skiing enjoyment possible for anyone willing to try. Promoted to General Manager in 1968, he orchestrated major racing events including the 1971 World Cup Tall Timber Classic and Arlberg Kandahar, serving as Director and Chairman. He revolutionized marketing strategies, increasing skier visits to Sugarloaf significantly.
Harry’s expertise brought him to Jackson Hole Mountain Resort in 1974, serving as Marketing Director and Vice President of Public Relations until retirement in 1995. His dedication transformed JHMR into a world-famous destination with notable events like the Wild West Classic World Cup Series, creating the Pole, Pedal, Paddle, Ski the Big One, and reviving Powder 8s. His work provided a vital connection between the community and the resort, starting local transportation to the mountain, and coordinating with the National Park Service on runway expansion and jet service at Jackson Airport.
Harry was a member of the N.H. Masonic Lodge and Jackson American Legion Honor Guard. He enjoyed wood-working, hunting, fishing, biking, golfing, and won several National Whitewater Canoe Racing titles with son, Dan. Harry always loved animals and the great outdoors.
Harry’s remarkable journey exemplified his passion for skiing, dedication to community service, and unwavering commitment to make skiing an inclusive experience for everyone. His legacy of skiing achievements and industry innovations will continue to inspire generations, reminding us all of the joy and connection that the sport can bring.
